Frequently Asked Questions
I don’t have sensitivities and do not care about green cleaning. Will you still clean for me?
Absolutely! We clean for everyone, not just those with chemical sensitivities. As a business, we prefer to preserve the health of our cleaners, our clients, and the health of the planet, so we will lean toward natural products known to be non-toxic, and we will gravitate toward biodegradable and more sustainable trash bags, paper products, packaging, etc. For those who are not concerned about their cleaning being non-toxic and green, we pair with the client with the cleaner who fits the cleaning needs the best.
What is Green Cleaning?
Green cleaning involves the least negative impact to the planet. This means products and tools that are biodegradable and sustainable. We at Christie’s Cleaning tend to use green and non-toxic interchangeably, because we also believe that impact to the creatures on the planet causes impact to the planet itself. We prefer products that contain natural fragrances (or no fragrances at all) and are free of ingredients known to be carcinogenic or endocrine-interrupting. We look for products that are effective, yet safe for people, pets, and aquatic life.
Are the products you use always green and non-toxic?
The short answer is that we try (and we prefer) to use green and non-toxic products. It is never possible to guarantee zero toxicity. The level of exposure to a particular substance may be completely safe for one organism, while the same level of exposure to that substance may be harmful for another organism. Sometimes a job needs a solution for which there is not a feasible nontoxic equivalent, so this is where we give choice to clients and cleaners to reach a mutually agreed upon solution. We want to start with products that are known to be safe for little people, pets, and for aquatic life, as that is a pretty good gauge for being “non-toxic”. We also lean toward products with natural scents (rather than the vague ingredient of “fragrance”), or we offer scent-free products for clients who request such. Biodegradable and sustainable methods and tools are often more expensive, so the degree to which we utilize these methods and tools will depend upon our arrangement with each client. We do our best to continue to research and learn new, affordable, inventive ways to offer the most non-toxic and green cleaning possible.
Is your cleaning effective? Do the products kill germs?
The short answer to both of these questions is yes. We can effectively remove visible surface dirt as effectively as any other cleaning company (dust, hair, grease, grime, etc.). If we encounter a situation where we are limited, we will inform our clients (preferably prior to services during a walkthrough).
There are natural products considered green and less toxic that are extremely effective in eliminating “germs” (bacteria, viruses, fungi and molds). What professional cleaners also consider is whether or not the germ-fighting products or methods are safe for the surface one wishes to disinfect. Many disinfectants (natural or otherwise) are acidic and not recommended for sensitive surfaces. In these cases, we may use a mechanical means of reducing germs. It is our job as professionals to be aware of each surface type and sanitize with a method that is most effective and safe. .
Do you tidy up, or do I need to pick up before you clean?
This depends on the cleaning package! Tidying, decluttering, and maid services are separate services for an additional price. We can help with clutter management as an add-on service, if this is what clients desire. To guarantee we will have the time on the schedule and to provide you with the most affordable cleaning package, we recommend putting away as much as reasonably possible so that surfaces can be cleaned quickly and efficiently.
